Hi,
Well, I've finally got to my last stop here in Afghanistan. I am now at a base called Shindand Air Base. It is located in the mountains northwest of Kandahar. We are located about 48 miles from south of Iran, This air base is the second largest base and the safest to be at. This base has only been hit by incoming rocket fire only once in the last 6 months, The base is about 26 square miles. The air field here is occupied by the US Army and the Afghanistan Army and is heavily protected by air patrol. There are thousands of military personnel here along with about 27,000 workers from DynCorp and other government agencies. We are sleeping in tents with 8 people to a tent. This is a true tent city. Hundreds of tents. I'm suppose to move to a different tent in the next couple of days so I can be with the other foremen of the electrical department. I have about 19 more online training courses to take and get my certificates of completion before I can actually be involved with the work. So far everything is looking pretty good.. The weather here is fairly cold during the evening and night hours and sunny and cool during the day. It is soooo dusty and dry here because they only have a few days out of the year that gets any rain. Last year they said that the temperatures got up to 135 in August but starts cooling down in September. The mountain terrain is all around this base.
When I was in Dubai during my stay for 4 days as "stand-by", I got to do a little sight seeing. It has been a real experience with the travels to get here. While we were at Kandahar military base, the morning we arrived there, the base got hit by 2 rocket fires before we landed there. Nothing was hit or damaged. There are alway attacks at that base, we were told. During my 4 day stay there in Kandahar we were awakened early in the morning around 2:30 with a bunch of rocket fire from helicopters buzzing around the outside perimeters of the base shooting at something going on. Our stay at Kandahar was only a transition base to get people from Dubai to their working FOB (Forward Operating Base). Some were transfered by helicopter and some by military air. We are about an hour and half flight from Kandahar by military prop plane. The mountains coming over here are a awesome site. They have snow covered tops. Not a dang tree in sight though. the Afghans and Taliban have poppy fields all over the place. That's about the only green that you can see from the air. It is rough terrain and full of Taliban.
Shindand will eventually will be the 2nd largest military base covering about 50 square miles. I've already meet up with some pretty good guys that willl become some good friends will I'm here. One of the guys I met is from Lynchburg and he rides a Harley. There is every kind of job imaginable here. If you want to clean porta potties there's openings. LOL There is a lot of work going on here for the next few years. They are all ready talking about moving all of the construction trades to a different area on base because of so much work going on and all construction trades are growing to the point of outgrowing our current on base location. The move is suppose to take place by the 1st of April. I'll stay in touch and keep everyone informed. Hope all is going well back at home.. write back soon.

Hey, am I missed yet? LOL .....Thought I'd send everyone a little note and tell you that I'm in Dubai waiting on my flight orders to come in from DynCorp that will send me on into Kandahar, Afghanistan. About thirty of us got here Monday after a 13 hour flight from Dallas/Ft Worth and are staying here at the Dubai Grand Hotel (which isn't so grand). We have been waiting around everyday to see if and when we take our flight out of here. Meanwhile we have enjoyed the stay sightseeing and visitiing and walking the 3 HUGE malls. One mall even has an indoor actual ski slope built inside with everything from ski lifts, snowboarding, skiing, and all kinds of fun sled stuff for the kids. We went to the world's tallest building, the Borj Khalif, amazingly tall. Couldn't go up in it to the observation level, because the tickets for the times to go up are all reserved a couple of days in advance. The other building and structures are a archectural marvel. We have roll call every morning at 8:00 here (10pm your time) and an evening muster/rollcall at 6:pm (8am your time). We are allowed to leave and see the sights of Dubai as long as we are back by evening muster/roll call. The weather here is great, around 75 degrees during the day and around 55 at night. There's not much grass around, mostly sand and rock. How did they build all those tall buildings on sand is a marvel in it's self. There is a monorail system that runs around Dubai, which makes it easier to get to one place or another. Dubai is about 50 miles square Very large city all spread out. So we are trying to enjoy the weather and accomodations here now, because when we get to Kandahar we will be staying in a bunker tent with sleeping cots until we are assigne to which ever military work base we get assigned to. Some have been held there on "stand by" for as long as three weeks in the cold and rain. I'd rather be on "stand by" here.

Students and staff from the '70's will remember him as an outstanding mentor of Tech students both on and off the basketball court. Coach Ford has gone on to become the third top-winning coach in Shelby County. |

I am saddened to learn of the death of my homeroom teacher Mrs. Willie B. Shinault! She was one of many facilitators/teachers at Tech that guided my path into adulthood and continued education. I will as with so many others miss her. I posted this notice in every newspaper in every language I speak...God speed on your journey Mrs. Shinault!
