| Someone recently notified me via Facebook of a group of people who had attended Memphis Tech and someone had put Memphis Tech's web site on it. I looked it up and behold there was my picture from the 59 year book. Sorry to say that I don't remember anyone. I guess I was a loner then, even tho I was in ROTC and the Band. I Lost all my school memorabilia to include my yearbook to a fire, so it was great seeing the yearbook. Would be interested to see if anyone still has the complete yearbook, who could look in it to see if there were anymore references to me other than just the picture. |

The classes of 1967 to 1973 had an informal
get-together last night (May 14) at Corky's for some excellent food and fellowship. Coach John Wright stopped by to visit and eat. Pat Malone and Buster Pearson planned the sucessful event and everyone had a great time. We plan to have another one around October. Watch the Tech web site for future info.

Good morning to all,
Just wanted to forward this email that I received from Rita's son regarding her condition. Wayne has been kind enough to include his address for cards and notes of well wishes. Your thoughts and prayers mean a lot to Rita and her family at this time as she continues to regain back her strength and speech. This was evident when Harriett and I paid her a visit last week. Having been told that she might not recognize us, we didn't know what to expect. But once Rita saw us, she lit up like a light.
May the Lord bless us daily in meeting our needs and keep us in his loving care always.

Mom is getting better according to the therapist. If you ask her she doesn't know but she is speaking more frequently complete sentences. We gotta work on the understanding part of this equation. I am writing in the hope that you might be able to help me with information about Troy Phillips, who I believe was a member of the Class of 1961. He's listed in the class roster for 1961 but does not appear in the Yearbook - perhaps he did not graduate? His art teacher was George Piaggio.
Troy, who died in 1995, was a talented artist.
I recently purchased a few of his drawings and would love to find out more about him. Unfortunately there is no information about him on the internet beyond the fact that he attended Memphis Technical High School.
Does anyone here still remember him? Any information would be much appreciated!

UPDATE:
Many new items and articles have been added to our website. When was the last time you visited the BLUE and GOLD BUZZ section? There are lots of new articles, including a just added "Tech Couples of the 50's".
And the OTHER SCHOOL YEARBOOKS section is growing. Near the bottom of this page, buttons have been added for "Historic Items" related to Central, Humes, Messick, South Side, Kortrecht, and Manassas. Among these are a very interesting 1926 Autograph Book from Central, a 1913 photo of the first Central graduating class, a 1915 Messick Class Photo, 1938 Humes Class Photo, 1938 South Side Class Photo, 1891 Kortrecht High Class Photo, 1926 Kortrecht Class Photo, 1926 Manassas Report Card, and articles on Isaac Hayes and Jimme Lunceford Band.
And have you noticed that the complete yearbooks have been added for almost all Tech classes from 1919 to 1952, as well as the last Tech Yearbook of 1987? Thanks to Maureen Thoni White for scanning the books that we were missing.
If you haven't visited the early Tech Class Roster pages, be sure and check out the early Tech History. We have thoroughly researched and updated the history of Tech - complete with references and resources.
We've even added a new section named EDUCATION BEFORE 1911, with pages on the various Memphis Schools that were a forerunner of Tech. This section also contains the "Pioneers of Early Education" and the "Early Black Education" pages.
Plus, we've added many photos from the recent Tech High 7 Reunion, the 1979-80-81 Multi Year Reunion, and the 1960-66 last Reunion Mixer in 2010.

| In today's newspaper, I was saddened to see the obituary for Mrs. Jessie Lee Hartwell, former cosmetology teacher at Tech. Always beautiful herself, she helped young women develop confidence and pride in their skills. I have a personal memory of a visit she made to my home the day my husband died. Her compassion touched me deeply and gave me strength. My sympathy goes out to her loved ones. |

Today,... a "Very Special Congratulations" goes out to 1938 Tech Graduate, Charles A. French, Jr., on his 65th Wedding Anniversary. He was married on March 4, 1946 to Margaret Jean Richardson, a 1944 graduate of Catholic High School. (Now Immaculate Conception High School for Girls.) They have been blessed with 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

I did not graduate from Tech, but I have been given a rare opportunity to be associated with this incredible website. Through my lifelong friend, Dave French 1969, I have become involved with scanning yearbooks, providing school research for Gene Gill, our webmaster, and created class reunion materials for several class reunions.
In the last 2 years I have made wondeful, and lasting friendships, with Tech alumni from Classes 1950 - 1970.

To All Memphis Tech High Alumni,
Do you remember our school motto? If not, it is: “Ad Astra Per Aspera” which translated means: “To The Stars Through Striving”
Many of your fellow alumni are STRIVING to keep your ‘Most Excellent STAR Website’ at the top of other high school alumni sites THROUGH plain passion and hard work. In order to do that, we need each one of YOU on board to assist our Webmaster.
As a student or facility member of Tech High School or just another Memphian, one cannot help but feel proud each time a visit is made to: memphistechhigh.com
My challenge to each alumnus is to get and stay involved. We are all busy and there is still only 24 hours in a day. Yet if each of us only contributed one item in 2011, our Webmaster, Gene Gill, would be looking for a more robust web-hosting provider.
One way to assist is by becoming a member and contributing regularly to the new ‘TECH FORUM’. Another way would be to become a class contact or assist the existing one. As you read this, Classes ’54, ’67, ’71, ’72, ’82, ’84, ’85, ’86 and ’87 still do not have a class graduate contact listed.
Many of us know and stay in touch with fellow graduates or had a parent or sibling that attended Tech. We are still in search of all kinds of Tech memorabilia, including the 1924 Memphis Crockett Technical HS Annual as well as an original copy of the 1934 Memphis Technical HS Annual. For those of you that frequent yard, garage and estate sales, please keep your eyes open for that long lost piece of Tech history.

Students from about 1979-81 will be saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Sherby Jean Gunn, a business teacher at Tech. There is an obituary with photo of Mrs. Gunn in today's Commercial Appeal.

YES VIRGINIA, THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS...
We now have a 1919 TECH YEARBOOK (Crockett Vocational High).
Dave French had heard about Memphis attorney and historian-collector, George Whitworth. Hoping that he might have a copy of our missing 1924 Yearbook, Dave called him last night. He told Dave he didn't have a 1924 Yearbook, but he did have a 6 page, 1919 Crockett Vocational High Yearbook - called "The Craftsman". And he was most agreeable to let us borrow it and scan it for the website. wow!!!
Maureen Thoni White picked it up this morning and scanned it. And your webmaster added it to the website this afternoon.
Previously we had thought the earliest Tech Yearbook was 1922, but we also suspected that there were some earlier ones out there. And Christmas did come early this year.
