Abingdon Press Announces Prize Honoring James W. Moore

Nashville, October 30—Abingdon Press, the trade imprint of The United Methodist Publishing House, announced today the creation of the James W. Moore Award for Inspirational Writing. The award honors longtime Abingdon Press author James W. Moore, whose books have anchored the inspirational category for the Press for twenty years.

The prize will be awarded to an author whose work demonstrates the qualities that have distinguished Jim Moore’s writing through the years: reaching deep into the spiritual and emotional center of people’s lives, demonstrating the challenge, the hope, and the consolation of the Gospel; offering a sense of purpose, confidence, and comfort to the reader in an engaging and appealing style.

“Jim Moore’s writing ministry has enriched hundreds of thousands of people across the world,” said Neil M. Alexander, president and publisher. “This award is a fitting tribute to his vibrant witness and is offered to encourage writers who employ simplicity and imagination to help readers experience and claim the work of the Spirit in their lives.”

The $2500 prize will be awarded at the discretion of the publisher and may be given to a new or previously published author. The prize will be awarded when deserved, creating the possibility of more than one recipient at a time. The initial prize may be awarded as early as spring 2008.

Jim Moore, longtime pastor at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston, has written 35 books to date for Abingdon Press. His first book, Seizing the Moments, was a Guideposts main selection when it was published in 1988. His best-selling title is Yes, Lord, I Have Sinned, but I Have Several Excellent Excuses, which has sold nearly 150,000 copies. His most recent book is Faith Is the Answer, but What Are the Questions? published in August 2007.
