Henry
Samuels, 87, president of Samuels Furniture Company died
at his home on Friday, November28, 2008. Henry graduated
from Tech High School and began working in the family
business. He later served in the U. S. Navy during WWII.
Upon returning, Henry resumed work at Samuels Furniture
for 70 years, growing the business into a fixture of the
Memphis community. Henry was a founding member and
president of Beth Sholom Synagogue. He also served as
president of the Memphis Home Furnishings Association. He
was a member of The Memphis Jewish Community Center,
Temple Israel and Ridgeway Country Club. Henry was a
longtime avid Tiger Basketball fan. He was preceded in
death by his parents, Louis and Annie Samuels, and
sisters, Myn Loket and Sarah Jacobs. He is survived by his
beloved wife of 65 years, Helen J. Samuels; daughters,
Judy Samuels Freedman (Kenneth) and Lesley Samuels Marks
(Sam); son Harry D. Samuels (Laurie). He was an adoring
and proud “Papa Red” to Mathew Freedman (Lisa), Jeffrey
Freedman (Eliza), Lee Freedman, Jacob Samuels, Sophie
Samuels and two great-granddaughters, Ainsley and Jorie
Freedman. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday,
November 30 at The Levy-Cooper Chapel in Temple Israel
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to
Temple Israel or The Memphis Jewish Community Center.
