JAMES
MALCOLM “Jimmy” MITCHELL, age 87, of Memphis, died Friday
November 28, 2008 at the Tennessee State Veteran’s Home in
Humboldt, TN. Mr. Mitchell was born June 9, 1921 in
Memphis, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of
64 years, Judy Cathey Mitchell and his parents, Lillie Clifton
Mitchell and Gordon Mitchell, all of Memphis, TN. Graveside
services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery at 1 p.m. Monday,
December 1, with Brother Richards, former pastor of Merton Ave.
Baptist Church , officiating. Mr. Mitchell was a life long member
of Merton Avenue Baptist Church, graduated from Tech High School
and attended Memphis State University. He began work with South
Central Bell in March, 1940. In August of 1942, he enlisted in the
U. S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS
Suwannee until the end of the war. After returning home, he
continued his career with South Central Bell Telephone Company
until retirement. He was a 50 year member of the Mason and
Scottish Rite and was a member of the Exchange Club in Humboldt,
TN. Mr. Mitchell leaves a son, Dr. Mike Mitchell and wife, Janet
of Memphis; a daughter, Cathey Jones and husband, Ted of Humboldt,
TN; a son, Steve Mitchell and wife, Heather of Albuquerque, New
Mexico; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The
family requests that any memorials be sent to the charity of the
