MARY CATHERINE DUNCAN MACDONALD. Memorial services celebrating the life of Mrs. Mary Catherine Duncan Macdonald will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the McGregor Presbyterian Church, 6505 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, South Carolina. Visitation will be in McGregor Hall following the service. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Katie was born on February 25, 1917 in Memphis, Tennessee to Frank and Frances Duncan. On December 26, 1938, she married Arthur Edward Macdonald, who preceded her in death in 1966. They raised four children: Catherine Duncan Macdonald, Susan Macdonald Glenn, Margaret Louisa Macdonald and Mary Macdonald Tomlinson. Katie taught in the Memphis City School system for over twenty-five years. After she left the teaching profession, she worked as a church secretary at Underwood United Methodist Church in Memphis before moving to Columbia to be close to her family. She was an active family member of Buntyn Presbyterian Church in Memphis for over sixty years. While in Columbia, she worked at McGregor Presbyterian Church Preschool, then found what she referred to as her favorite job, as a “Carousel Lady” at Columbiana Centre Mall in Irmo. She was also an active member of McGregor Presbyterian Church and served as Moderator of the Women of the Church. She is mourned by her daughters; by her sons-in-law, Tom Glenn and Don Tomlinson; by her grandchildren, Leslie Herrle (Paul), Chris Hones (Leigh), Matthew Glenn (Meghan), Jessica Crumpacker (Jay) and Rebecca Tomlinson; by her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Cobain Herrle, Emmaline Mae Herrle, Amelia Grace Jones, Ethan Henry Glenn, Ansleigh Frances Glenn, Mary Katelyn Crumpacker, and Andrew James Crumpacker; and by many other members of her extended family and friends. The family extends their appreciation to the many loving caregivers at the Columbia Presbyterian Home and at Harmony Hospice. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to McGregor Presbyterian Church, to Buntyn Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Tennessee, or to the Presbyterian Homes of South Carolina.
