Hello to Barron and Carolyn Hall, a lovely couple I remember so well. They asked about Anne Poteat, English and social studies teacher. I saw her a few years ago at a concert, and she was still teaching but may be retired by now. She looked well and happy. So good you have located the Tech website. Tell others about it.

Is Mrs. Poteat (I forget the spelling), my 12th grade English teacher still alive? I will never forget her. She taught us how to write a Resume! I still have the example she gave out. I'm always telling friends how she really cared about us. I would love for her to know that! I also speak about Mrs. Elliot and Mrs. Garner too! Mrs. Garner drove us around in order for us to fill out applications for a job! These were tools taught by them for our future! I had signed up for State Tech at that time, but God's plan changed everything for me. I got married to my wonderful Class Sweetheart, had our baby and moved to another country. I couldn't have planned it any better than that. The Air Force really is a great way of life. I forgot about Mr. Apple. We love him!

This is for you former Tech High teachers. I hope many of you will see this. It comes from the heart and is a result of many real life experiences. I was reminiscing in the Tech website a little bit ago when it occurred to me that I owe you all a debt for which there is only one payment: Thank you. It is all that I have as payment. Appreciation, gratitude, understanding all seem so menial, but it is all I have, especially to those of you who taught me. I have been teaching in the public arena for 20 years. Until I started teaching, it was impossible to understand the issues with which you good people had to deal and the mentality of the students you encountered. After all, I was too much like them. Today's students are likely much worse than those with whom you worked, but nonetheless, we were sometimes unappreciative and painfully obnoxious. Of course, we may have often felt that you were the problem. I am so grateful to you all for putting your foot down and insisting that we learn. You taught us principles of mental discipline that are ongoing. You told us that this would help us later when all we could understand was the now. Who could imagine how Shakespeare could fall into this category and yet I now enjoy reading his works more now than when I was a student. (I just finished Hamlet, again, last week.) I know that teachers today also care, but you were the best and I hope that I have been a tribute to all of you in a most positive way. Please accept my gratitude and undying love for what you tried to do for me because now, at age 57, I understand more clearly. Thank you and may God bless you all.

I was so shy and afraid of people in high school. I really enjoyed the football and basketball games.

Steve Wright, I do remember you from football, but also from Spanish class. You had such a good sense of humor.

I wonder if anyone on this board knows the whereabouts of Carolyn White. Carolyn and I went through al 12 years of school together.

I also wonder if anyone knows the whereabout of my cousins, Pat and Betty Christian. They graduated from Tech sometime in the 50s.

Thanks.

and a special note to Corney Nelson Pittman....... thank you
for sharing the story about your dad and Mr. Highsaw. I need to correct one item in your story. Mr. Highsaw did not die in Washington D.C. He passed away while visiting his son (Dr. Robert B. Highsaw) in Tuscaloosa Alabama. Our Principal was 74 years old. What you may have been remembering is that after he retired as Tech's principal in 1957 he then went on to become a librarian of the U.S. House of Representatives, and he was working in Washington D.C......... but was not there when he died. For a complete obituary see The Memphis Press Scimitar dated 3-12-1962 or the Commercial Appeal dated 3-12-1962.

The teachers (Ray Ford, Carolyn Elliott, Betty Hendon, Mr. Wilhelm, Mr Bourne, Katie Macdonald, Daisy Kirk, Mr. D,and Mrs Anderson) were all interested in the students.

Thanks for helping everyone enjoy Tech High again.

I would especially like to say hello to the "Hollywood Group" that was in Hollywood Elementary School: Paula Whitten, Beverly Ledford, Judy Kellum, Regina Tedford, Margaret Alford, Mary Hellen Berry, Byron Stafford just to name a few. We were together before Tech. Over the years I have come to realize how much your friendship meant to me. Your families and each of youm gave me "the Family" that I did not have. So Thank you all because sometime you never know what you meant to someone.

I just learned of this Web site. WOW. It is so great. I have alot of things to send and share. I have alot of the Newspapers, press clippings, photos etc. of us at Tech.

I live in Kentucky now but I do miss Memphis. Thanks to all of you for the help and friendship you gave over the years. I still have you all in my thoughts and my heart.

Message:    Hi classmates of 1965

Tech was a great school and I enjoyed my time there.

I am now married and live in Hernando, MS. I will celebrate my 37th wedding anniversay on Dec. 5.
My husband is Richard Howell and he is a Captain with the Hernando Fire Dept. He retired from Memphis Fire Dept. after 33 years. We have been living in Hernando for 5 years and we really like it.

I have one son. His name is Stephen. He is in the Marine Corps. He is stationed in Hawaii. He is a Sgt. He is in the band. During his 1st year in the Marines, he was picked to go to France for a Memorial Day celebation at "Bella Woods".

I have a granddaughter, her name is Destiny. She is 3 and 1/2 months old. I went to Hawaii to see her when she was just 3 weeks old. She had colic really bad and my daughter-in-law Dorothy had never been around anyone who had had colice and she did not know anything about it. Stephen had colic when he was a baby and I knew about it.

Stephen and Dorothy have been married seven years. They met in college at Northwest Community College and then they went to Delta State in Cleveland, MS and they graduated in 1999.

Stephen and Dorothy were in Quantico,VA before they went to Hawaii. Stephen majored in music in college. He is now working on his Masters. They are both 32 years old.

This was such a great idea. Thanks for this page and a way to keep up with friends from a while back.

Blessings,

Linda (Blanchard) Howell

If a Yearbook included the Principal with the teachers for a particular year, then they are included on this website.

But...if you'll do the research and notify me with the names of the Principals and the years on the website where they're not included, I'll immediately add their names.

Best regards,

We found no fewer than 5 relatives in the annuals. One lady found a senior photo of her step-brother who died in the service of his country at the end of world war II. I will be making her a copy of that photo for her to keep. Several people found pictures of their parents, uncles, aunts, etc. This is a part of my labors that i love. Let me know if you enjoyed the collection and what i might do to improve it. As always, everyone feel free to add to the collection for the enjoyment of others. Many people commented on the Tech football jacket from 1945 that bill Johnson donated to the cause. Thanks bill. First let me say thank you to J.D. Smith (Class of 1968) for emailing me the link to the Tech High Alumni website. I spent an hour or more last night looking at just about every inch of it and I must say it is Super!!! Also a Very Special THANK YOU goes to Gene and Sue for their vision and determination to create the website and bringing it to life,...Yeah Class of 1951,(also my birth year.) Continued thanks goes to Rob for all the Tech High Memorabilia,...Look out Rob, I have found a few more items in my Junk for you!!! And thanks to all the many others who have and will continue to contribute to the growing success of this living history.

I am very blessed for so many things in my life and attending Tech is still high on that ever growing list. My Dad was in the Class of 1938 and at 88 is thankfully with us today. I just called to let him know about the site and he was very anxious to,... Hang-Up phone and Dial-Up his computer. I will certainly be letting my brother Chuck (Class of 1970) know about the site as well.

Although I am pleased to possibly be the first 1969 class member to post a message, I hope I am not the last. We seem to be the Casper Class and always disappearing. Let's change that and become better represented in the future. When my Dad sends a message, he will be the 3rd member from the Class of 1938 to be represented. They might just have the record for now.

I am looking forward to attending the next reunion and seeing many new faces. Thanks again to everyone and God's Blessings to you and yours.

Message: Hello to all of you!I hope that all of you are living well. My life is great! I am not the richest person in the world financially but family wise and friend wise I am truly blessed. My life at Tech was a necessity. I had grown up in Frayser and hated it. If you didn't commit a certain number of crimes it seemed you were out of place there. I told my parents if they didn't get me out of Frayser I was probably going to end up in prison or dead. That is when I found myself at Memphis Tech. While at Tech I found a true diversity of people with all kinds of different ideas. Some of the people that I would love to see or hear from I haven't seen or heard from since school. They don't visit these websites, they don't leave names, numbers, addresses or email. I am living in Oxford,MS these days with my wonderful wife Stacye and my eight year old son Wyatt and five year old step daughter Kayla. I also have a beautiful daughter Abby that lives in Lafayette, IN. These days I am still playing music,(Drums & Lead Vocals) in a band by the name of "King Bailey". We are a progressive blues/rock band doing approximately seventy percent originals. My partner in music of nine years is Barry Swain, guitar player extrodinare and vocalist and co-conspirator in writing. I am also selling real estate in Oxford. I work for Rebel Realty & Land Co. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me and cares to get in touch. I have very fond memories of many people from Tech. I have attended a couple of reunions and found that I was glad that I hadn't seen some of them since high school but didn't get to see many people that I was hoping would be there. Those of you that attended the morning meetings in the back of the parking lot,and those of you that I played music with are very special to me. Then there are those of you that were friends of mine that were very special to me in my times of heart break etc. that I would truly love to hear from. You know who you are and you know that I miss you! I have been in touch with Carolyn Elliott for several years now and it has been such a wonderful thing. Carolyn thank you for your wonderful friendship. I am not a racist nor did I raise my children to be racist. That is truly one of the greatest advantages of having gone to Tech. Though some of the times were tough and yes we had our share of violence and hatred I learned to love all kinds of different people and it has served me well in life and continues to do so today. I remember so many wonderful people that were in classes with me,ahead of me and behind me that I would love to hear from. So if you decide to say hello in an email please put your name along with from Memphis Tech in the subject line so that I won't delete it as junk mail.If you had rather call to say hello my cell number is 662-832-5400. I have unlimited minutes and long distance so I would be happy to call you back where ever you are when ever you like. Steve

We have found a few already, but unfortunately it was after they were Deceased. I want to find them ALL before that happens, so we can share our lives and memories. My one dream is to reunite with my best friend at Tech-Betty Strickland. If you do not know where these people are now, maybe you know where they were, or who they worked for, at some time, and we can go from there. Any help is appreciated. It took almost 40 years for someone to find me, and I am SO Very grateful. Thanks,in advance, for all of your help.

E-mail address: ed@flat5.net
Message: For a short-timer -- I attended Tech for only my senior year ('66), graduated, and then came back for another year of the Electronics (not sure how "legal" that was) -- I am amazed how many memories came back while looking through the '66, '67 and '68 graduating class pictures. Friends, and some very dear friends, all populate those pages as well as those of the faculty.
It is oh-so-odd the subtle but life-long effect we have on each other. Time let's us put all these things together and, from them, assemble a life.
Thank you, my friends, for your contribution.

E-mail address: vickiroy@worldnet.att.net
Message: I had a wonderful time at the 1960-1966 reunion last year. I believe Memphis Tech gave me the foundation of learning for my present success. I started my career in the secretarial/accounting field, and eventually became an RN. I am a successful business owner of Vicki Roy Home Health in Harlingen, TX in the Rio Grande Valley with approximately 1000 employees. I took Spanish at Tech and lived in Monterrey, Mexico for about six or seven years. And I use Spanish here as the majority of the folks are Spanish speaking. Sometimes we just can't figure where we're going in life when we are young, but God has a plan for everyone's life if we will just let Him lead. I do miss my Memphis culture sometimes, but God has blessed me with a son who looks and sings like Elvis; he performed at the 2006 Reunion. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again real soon. God bless you.

E-mail address: swright@telepak.net
Message: Again, in reflecting on Carolyn Elliott's remembrance of Willie Walker and Titus Steele, I remember when basketball Coach Ray Ford had the Lester High basketball team over at Tech. That was some show! The shortest guy on their team could dunk the ball, quite an event for us white boys in those days. That Lester team had Rich Jones, who went on to a career in the old ABA, Claude Humphreys, who played for several years in the NFL and Charlie Paulk, who played college ball with the Morgan twins in Oklahoma. Both Tech Coach Ford and Lester Coach Spillers were ahead of the curve.

Your Name: Carolyn Elliott 1963-1987
E-mail address: carolyn38104@yahoo.com
Message: My thanks to Steve Wright for his comments on my essay about the peaceful integration of Tech High. Indeed, his father Coach Wright was a strong force in maintaining calm and discipline during what could have been a troubled time. Coach Wright was one of the watchful ones who unobtrusively patrolled the third floor near my classroom. Had the faculty not stood behind the principal and if the students had not been intelligent and honorable, chaos could have erupted. I was so proud of Tech at that time.

Your Name: Steve Wright '66
E-mail address: swright@telepak.net
Message: I have just finished reading Caroline Elliott's account of the integration of Tech in '63. I was a sophomore that year and clearly remember the assembly in which Mr. Bourne informed the student body of the decision for Tech to be the first integrated school. After that assembly, some of our students left the assembly and started to leave the campus, insisting that they would not go to school with ...well, you know what they said. My father, Coach Wright, saw them heading off campus and got in front of them. I was not part of that group and do not know exactly what he said to them, however, I think the words he used in telling them to return to school and his tone did not need to be interpreted. As far as I remember, that was the only attempt by any of our students to flee history.

Message: Hi Mrs. Elliott,

Thank you for telling us about your years at Tech. Throughout our years at Tech we all had our favorite teachers who made life long impressions on us and inspired us to be the best that we could be. Looking back, and especially as I scanned all these yearbooks, it was amazing to see how many years these dedicated people devoted their lives to doing what they loved to do. And so it is with most of us. So much of our lives is consumed with labors of love. This web site has been a labor of love for Gene and me. Knowing what the magnificent end result would be was what kept us working so diligently non stop. The whole idea was conceived in Gene Gill's wonderful imagination. I was only a tool at his disposal and am always the willing assistant.
Thank you for visiting the web site and thank you for loving Tech as we do.

E-mail address: carolyn38104@yahoo.com
Message: Hi Sue,

You and Gene are truly among the "Tech Notables." As sponsor of the yearbook for twenty years, I certainly recognize and appreciate all the hard work you did scanning the pages. What memories they recall!

Like Mrs. Hendon, I came to teach at Tech in the 1960's, and like her, I learned to love the school and its traditions. Certainly we knew of the contributions of the classes of the 1950's, and the 1940's, and even further back. We were mentored by Ruthie Stanfield, Mayo Linder, Daisy Kirk, Margaret Kelly, and others who vividly reported episodes of Mr. Highsaw's tenure. We even got to meet many of those former students, as Tech grads were constantly returning to visit a favorite teacher.

I taught Tech students across three decades, from 1963 until the closing in 1987. Each class had its unique character and each brought something special to our school.
Thanks to you and Gene, we can now all keep in touch and relive the memories.

Message: I second Sue's kind and true words about Gene. He is to be thanked and commended by all. As is Sue herself. She has spent countless hours scanning and sending info to Gene in California. Let me set the record straight a bit. So many people have been thanking me for this web site. The following is my contribution. I began collecting Tech items around 1990. I was in full steam collecting by 1997 and had the entire set of annuals by 2004. That is the extent of my work on this web site. I loaned everything to Gene and Sue and will do so any time. I loan things for reunions and give extra annuals to folks that need them. I love doing it. I look up and copy relatives pictures for anyone that asks. I have never charged anyone for any of this. Like I said......I love doing it. BUT........ Gene and Sue are the bones behind this web site. Class of 1951!!! To include me with those two would be like giving credit to the guy that handed Michelangelo the chisel to sculpt the statue of David. You guys are nice but let's give credit where credit is due. Gene Gill and Sue Johnson.
I have met both of them and come to love them and their talents. My thanks to them both! Tech High School now has a web site equal to none in the country.

MUCH work went into it by Gene Gill of 1951. Gene was the most talented boy of the class of 1951 and STILL is today! Hope you come back often!
